Silicone Breast Forms Troubleshooting: Solving the Most Common Problems
Share
Even with the best breast forms and the best intentions, problems arise. A breast form that keeps shifting. Skin that's reacting in a way it didn't before. A bra that fitted last month but doesn't fit the same way now. A surface that looks different from how it looked when the breast forms were new. These problems are solvable — most of them have straightforward causes and straightforward solutions — but finding the solution requires knowing where to look.
This guide covers the most common breast form problems systematically: what causes them, how to fix them, and how to prevent them from recurring. It's organised by problem type so you can go directly to the issue you're experiencing.
Quick Reference: Problem and Solution Summary
| Problem | Most Likely Cause | Primary Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Breast forms keep shifting | Bra too large; wrong style; band too loose | Refit bra; size down in band; try full-cup style |
| Breast forms feel uncomfortable | Wrong size; bra too tight; skin sensitivity | Check size; refit bra; review skin care routine |
| Skin redness or irritation | Soap residue; product incompatibility; prolonged wear | Rinse more thoroughly; review products; shorten sessions |
| Breast forms look asymmetrical | Different positioning in each cup; bra fit issue | Reposition; check bra cup fit on both sides |
| Surface feels sticky after cleaning | Soap residue not fully rinsed | Rinse again thoroughly under running water |
| Surface looks dull or faded | UV exposure; incompatible products; abrasive cleaning | Review storage and cleaning practices |
| Breast forms feel heavier than before | Normal — perception changes with familiarity | No action needed; weight hasn't changed |
| Bra straps digging in | Band too large; straps compensating for poor band support | Size down in band; check band fit |
| Visible bra lines under clothing | Wrong bra style for clothing; seamed bra under thin fabric | Switch to seamless bra; choose appropriate style |
| Breast forms feel cold at start of wear | Normal — silicone at room temperature | Warm in hands before wearing; reaches body temp quickly |
Problem 1: Breast Forms Keep Shifting or Moving
Shifting is the most common breast form problem and almost always has a bra-related cause. The breast forms themselves don't shift — they move when the bra isn't holding them adequately.
Cause: Bra cup too large. If the bra cup is larger than the breast form, the form has room to move within the cup. The cup should fit the breast form snugly — no gaping, no excess space.
Solution: Try a smaller cup size. The breast form should fill the cup completely. If the cup gapes away from the breast form at the top or sides, the cup is too large.
Cause: Bra band too loose. A loose band allows the entire bra to move, which means the breast forms move with it. The band should be snug — you should be able to fit two fingers underneath it, but it shouldn't ride up at the back.
Solution: Size down in the band. If you're on the loosest hook, try the next band size down. A snugger band provides the foundation that keeps the breast forms in position.
Cause: Wrong bra style. Bralettes, soft-cup bras, and unstructured styles don't provide the cup structure needed to hold breast forms in position. The cup needs to be structured enough to maintain its shape under the weight of the breast form.
Solution: Switch to a full-cup or 3/4 cup bra with structured cups. For larger sizes (D cup and above), underwire provides additional structure that prevents cup deformation. See our bra guide for complete style guidance.
Cause: High-impact activity without adequate support. Running, jumping, and other high-impact activities create forces that exceed what a standard bra can manage.
Solution: Use the two-layer approach for high-impact activities: a fitted bra holding the breast forms, with a sports bra worn over it for additional compression. See our exercise guide.
Problem 2: Breast Forms Feel Uncomfortable
Discomfort during breast form wear has several possible causes, each with a different solution.
Cause: Wrong size — too large. Breast forms that are too large for your frame feel heavy and create pressure on the chest and shoulders. The weight is distributed through the bra straps and band, and if the breast forms are too large, this weight becomes uncomfortable over time.
Solution: Consider sizing down. The correct size should feel present but not burdensome. If the breast forms feel heavy after a short wearing session, they may be too large for comfortable extended wear. See our size guide.
Cause: Bra too tight. A bra that's too tight in the band or cups creates pressure that becomes uncomfortable during extended wear. The band should be snug but not constricting; the cups should contain the breast forms without squeezing them.
Solution: Check the bra fit. If the band leaves marks on the skin after wearing, it's too tight. If the cups create visible pressure lines on the breast form, they're too small. Adjust accordingly.
Cause: Skin sensitivity at the contact area. Some people develop sensitivity at the breast form contact area — particularly during extended wear, in hot weather, or during periods of hormonal change (including HRT).
Solution: Shorten wearing sessions, moisturise the contact area the evening before wearing, and ensure the breast forms are thoroughly cleaned and completely dry before wearing. If sensitivity persists, see our safety guide.
Cause: Bra straps digging in. Straps that dig into the shoulders indicate that the band is too loose — the straps are compensating for insufficient band support by taking on more of the breast form weight.
Solution: Size down in the band. A snugger band takes the weight off the straps. Also check that the straps are adjusted correctly — they should sit flat on the shoulders without digging in or slipping off.
Problem 3: Skin Redness, Irritation, or Rash
Skin reactions at the breast form contact area are almost always caused by something external — a product, a residue, or prolonged wear — rather than by the platinum silicone itself.
Cause: Soap residue on the breast form. Soap residue left on the breast form surface after cleaning is one of the most common causes of skin irritation. The residue contacts the skin during wear and causes a reaction.
Solution: Rinse the breast forms more thoroughly after cleaning. Run them under warm water for longer than you think necessary — until the surface feels completely smooth and clean, with no slippery residue. See our care guide.
Cause: Incompatible skin care or cosmetic products. Products applied to the chest area — moisturisers, body lotions, deodorants, sunscreen — that contact the breast form surface can cause reactions. Oil-based products, fragranced products, and products containing alcohol are the most common culprits.
Solution: Switch to fragrance-free, water-based products for everything that contacts the chest area. If you've recently changed a product and the irritation started around the same time, the new product is likely the cause.
Cause: Prolonged wear without breaks. Extended wear — particularly in warm conditions — increases perspiration at the contact area, which can cause irritation in sensitive skin.
Solution: Shorten wearing sessions. Take breaks during the day if possible. Ensure the contact area is clean and dry before each wearing session.
Cause: Bra fabric irritation. The bra fabric — particularly if it contains synthetic fibres, dyes, or fabric softener residue — can cause irritation at the contact area.
Solution: Wash the bra with a fragrance-free detergent without fabric softener. Try a bra in a different fabric — cotton or modal inner lining rather than synthetic.
If irritation persists after addressing these causes, consult a healthcare professional. See our safety guide for more on skin reactions.
Problem 4: Breast Forms Look Asymmetrical
Visible asymmetry — one breast form sitting higher, lower, or at a different angle from the other — is almost always a positioning or bra fit issue.
Cause: Different positioning in each cup. If the breast forms are positioned differently in each cup — one sitting higher, one lower — the silhouette will look asymmetrical.
Solution: Remove both breast forms and reposition them simultaneously, checking in a mirror that they're at the same height and angle. The base of each breast form should sit at the same level in each cup.
Cause: Bra cups fitting differently on each side. If the bra cups fit differently on each side — one cup fitting well, one gaping or too tight — the breast forms will sit differently in each cup.
Solution: Check the bra fit on each side independently. If the cups fit differently, the bra may not be the right style for your chest width, or the bra may be worn unevenly. Adjust the straps on each side independently to achieve even positioning.
Cause: Natural asymmetry in the chest. Most people have some natural asymmetry in their chest — one side slightly higher or wider than the other. This asymmetry can affect how breast forms sit even in a well-fitted bra.
Solution: Minor asymmetry is normal and usually not visible under clothing. If the asymmetry is significant, a bra with individually adjustable cups can help compensate.

Surface changes in platinum silicone breast forms are almost always caused by care or storage issues rather than by the material itself degrading spontaneously.
Cause: Stickiness after cleaning — soap residue. The most common cause of post-cleaning stickiness is soap that wasn't fully rinsed. Soap residue on platinum silicone creates a sticky surface.
Solution: Rinse again under warm running water until the surface feels completely smooth. Take longer than you think necessary. If stickiness persists after thorough rinsing, it may indicate a surface change from an incompatible product.
Cause: Roughness or surface texture change — abrasive cleaning. Abrasive cleaning materials — scrubbing pads, textured cloths, stiff brushes — scratch the silicone surface and damage the painted finish. This damage is cumulative and irreversible.
Solution: Switch to cleaning with clean hands or a soft lint-free cloth only. The damage already done cannot be reversed, but further damage can be prevented.
Cause: Colour fading or shift — UV exposure or incompatible products. The hand-painted finish on Femmevee breast forms can fade from UV exposure (sunlight, tanning beds) or from contact with incompatible products (alcohol-based products, chemical sunscreens).
Solution: Store away from direct sunlight. Review the products that contact the breast form surface and eliminate any that contain alcohol or chemical UV filters. Fading that has already occurred cannot be reversed.
Cause: Silicone surface bonding — contact with other silicone products. Silicone surfaces can bond if stored in contact with other silicone products. This creates a surface change that's difficult to reverse.
Solution: Store breast forms separately from other silicone products, separated by a soft cloth. See our care and storage guide.
Problem 6: Visible Bra Lines or Bra Showing Through Clothing
Visible bra lines under clothing are a styling issue rather than a breast form issue — the solution is bra selection rather than breast form adjustment.
Cause: Seamed bra under thin or clingy fabric. Seamed bras create visible lines under thin fabrics — jersey, silk, thin cotton. The seams show through the fabric as ridges.
Solution: Switch to a seamless or smooth-cup bra for thin fabrics. A seamless bra has no seams in the cup that would create visible lines.
Cause: Bra colour showing through light-coloured clothing. A dark bra under a white or light-coloured top is visible through the fabric.
Solution: Wear a bra in a colour that matches your skin tone (not white — skin-tone colours are less visible than white under light fabrics) under light-coloured clothing.
Cause: Bra straps visible at the neckline or shoulders. Standard bra straps are visible under certain necklines — off-shoulder, halter neck, wide scoop neck.
Solution: Use a bra with convertible straps that can be repositioned, or choose a bra style designed for the specific neckline (strapless, halter-compatible).
Problem 7: Breast Forms Feel Different from When They Were New
Breast forms that feel different from when they were new — heavier, less comfortable, or different in texture — may be experiencing normal changes or may indicate a care issue.
Cause: Perception change, not product change. New breast forms often feel more noticeable than they do after a period of regular wear — the body adapts to the weight and presence of the breast forms over time. If the breast forms feel heavier than they used to, this is usually a perception change rather than an actual weight change.
Solution: No action needed. The breast forms haven't changed — your perception of them has, in the opposite direction from what you'd expect. This is normal.
Cause: Surface change from care issues. If the texture of the breast form surface feels different — rougher, stickier, or less smooth — this may indicate a care issue. See Problem 5 above.
Cause: Shape change from storage compression. If the breast forms have been stored under compression — under heavy objects, in a space that's too small — the shape may have changed over time.
Solution: Allow the breast forms to rest in their natural shape for 24 hours without compression. If the shape recovers, the compression was temporary. If it doesn't recover, the compression may have been sustained long enough to cause permanent distortion. See our lifespan guide for guidance on when replacement is appropriate.
Problem 8: Breast Forms Don't Look Natural Under Clothing
If the breast forms don't look natural under clothing — the profile looks constructed, the shape looks wrong, or the silhouette looks unbalanced — the issue is usually size, positioning, or clothing choice.
Cause: Wrong size. Breast forms that are too large for the frame look disproportionate; those that are too small look insignificant. Both result in a silhouette that doesn't look natural.
Solution: Review the size selection using our size guide. The correct size is proportionate to your frame — not the largest size that fits, but the size that looks balanced with your shoulder width and overall build.
Cause: Incorrect positioning. Breast forms positioned too high, too low, or too far apart look unnatural. The base of the breast form should sit at the natural chest level, and the forms should be centred in the bra cups.
Solution: Reposition and check in a mirror from the front and side. The breast forms should create a smooth, continuous line from the chest to the bra cup edge.
Cause: Clothing not suited to the breast form profile. Clothing that's too tight across the bust distorts the breast form profile; clothing that's too loose obscures it. Both result in a silhouette that doesn't look natural.
Solution: Size clothing to fit the bust measurement with breast forms in place. See our styling guide for clothing-specific guidance.

When to Contact Support or Consider Replacement
Most breast form problems are solvable with the guidance above. The following situations warrant contacting Femmevee support or considering replacement:
- Persistent skin irritation that doesn't resolve after addressing all likely causes
- Surface damage that significantly affects the realistic appearance and doesn't improve with correct care
- Shape distortion that doesn't recover after 24 hours of uncompressed rest
- Any structural issue — tears, separation, or damage to the breast form itself
- A problem that isn't covered by this guide and that you can't identify the cause of
For guidance on when replacement is appropriate, see our lifespan and durability guide. For the complete FAQ, see our breast forms FAQ.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: My breast forms keep shifting — what's the fastest fix?
A: Check the bra band first. If the band rides up at the back, it's too loose — size down. If the band fits correctly, check the cup size — the breast form should fill the cup completely without room to move. These two adjustments resolve the majority of shifting problems.
Q: My skin is red after wearing — is it the breast forms?
A: Platinum silicone is hypoallergenic and very rarely causes skin reactions directly. The most common causes of redness are soap residue on the breast form (rinse more thoroughly), incompatible skin care products (switch to fragrance-free, water-based products), or prolonged wear (shorten sessions). Address these causes before concluding the breast forms are the problem.
Q: My breast forms feel sticky after cleaning — did I damage them?
A: Stickiness after cleaning almost always means soap residue. Rinse again under warm running water until the surface feels completely smooth. If stickiness persists after thorough rinsing, review the products you've been using on or near the breast forms.
Q: The colour on my breast forms is fading — can I fix it?
A: Fading that has already occurred cannot be reversed. Prevent further fading by storing away from direct sunlight and avoiding products containing alcohol or chemical UV filters. If the fading significantly affects the realistic appearance, replacement may be appropriate.
Q: One breast form sits higher than the other — how do I fix this?
A: Remove both and reposition simultaneously, checking in a mirror. The base of each breast form should sit at the same level. If repositioning doesn't resolve it, check the bra fit on each side — the cups may be fitting differently on each side.
Q: My breast forms don't look natural — what am I doing wrong?
A: The three most common causes are: size too large or too small for the frame, incorrect positioning in the bra cups, or clothing that doesn't fit correctly over the breast form profile. Work through each systematically — size first, then positioning, then clothing.
